Web actions du’jour

DesignNotes | 5 hours ago

I started thinking about the actions that I do with those web sites du’jour everyone is talking about. The above list includes 1. the ability to follow others, 2. there’s privacy settings, 3. I can copy paste text onto and off the site, and 4. I can save stuff. Are there any actions that I’m missing?

Publicly humiliate her into joining your gym

adfreak | 5 hours ago

Here's another entry for our public-shaming file: this bus-stop ad for a health club in the Netherlands. It has a scale in the seat and displays the sitter's weight for all to see. We're sure Fitness First is expecting a huge spike in membership from this, but the effect is ruined the moment two people share the seat. That and, you know, trying to win people's business by humiliating them. Agency: N=5. Via Gizmodo and Animal New York. —Posted by [...]

Bought Company of Heroes this morning on Steam. I’m generally an RTS hater, but since everyone around me seems to be playing it constantly, I thought I’d give it a try, so that if nothing else, I would be able to whine about specifics, rather than just in general. And Relic did Homeworld, the only RTS worth playing, so… As it turns out, the game needs to authenticate itself against THQ’s servers, which would be fine, if we weren’t behind a firewall. [...]

Omega Code

JoshSpear.com | 5 hours ago

While some bands are well connected enough in the music biz to get producers like the Neptunes or Rick Rubin to work on their debut album, Brazilian metal-industrial band Omega Code is more concerned with getting artists like Joshua Davis (pictured here) and Mike Cina. Convinced that a visual element must accompany a true music-listening experience, the group commissioned these guys, plus an enviable crew of other top guns (Si Scott, Motomichi and Dimitre Lima, who has gone on to lush [...]

Preview iPhone Websites in Safari

CreativeIQ | 5 hours ago

Last year we published a tip showing how web designers could test their website designs on Apple’s iPhone Simulator. Here is another, simpler, tip along those lines. Many companies today are creating special versions of their website that automatically display for iPhone visitors. Some examples include Amazon, Google, Bank of America, and even our CreativeTechs Tips blog. Turn on Safari’s Developer Menu option and you can easily tell Safari to impersonate an iPhone (or other browser types) when visiting different [...]

Hillshire Farm is inspiring more meat poetry

adfreak | 6 hours ago

"Bang bang choo-choo train/Eat lunchmeat on the aeroplane." Such are the lyrics in this loopy Hillshire Farm spot via TBWA\Chiat\Day that debuted a while back but hasn't gotten nearly the buzz it deserves. At first I thought it was set aboard Air Force One because of the politician type flashing the victory sign and his Secret Service detail. But then, what's everyone else doing there? I think way too much about these kinds of things. I need to get [...]

Utah gets animated about clean-water issue

adfreak | 6 hours ago

Utah's first effort to help provide clean drinking water to those without has impressed right out of the gate, thanks to a cool Web site and a quartet of smooth pop-up-book ads from Mike Morris that, cultural stereotypes notwithstanding, look fantastic and successfully communicate their higher purpose. See all four ads here. And speaking of cultural stereotypes, it makes total sense that Utah would commit itself to this noble effort. The place is largely desert, and water may be [...]

INQMND x Nike Sportswear SS09

JoshSpear.com | 6 hours ago

Inquiring Mind (INQMND) Magazine delves into the minds of Richard Clarke, Jesse Leyva, and Jarrett Reynolds, three designers that drive the look of Nike Sportswear. They may not have all come from backgrounds typical to their trade, but whatever they’re doing has yielded some of the illest looks yet. We’re particularly partial to the Obsidian Flywire Cortez’s. These are not your traditional George Costanzas. Also, be sure to check out INQMND’s new podcast with DJ Mike Danger.

The ad, not the beer, will have you spinning

adfreak | 6 hours ago

This "Lighter World" commercial from Spanish agency El Laboratorio for Mahou Premium Light beer finds tap dancers stepping lightly (ha!) on the walls and ceiling. According to info I found on the Web (and which therefore must be true), a rotating set was built in favor of using F/X. So, the room really was spinning, just like it would be after a few too many. That makes the routine especially impressive, though I imagine the performers' shins ached the [...]

The end of browser tabs?

Reaction! | 7 hours ago

In January 2000, T-Online asked Information Architects Japan what they'd do if they could design a browser from scratch. Their answer was "tabs". Eight years later Aza Raskin, head of user experience at Mozilla, asked them what the tabs of today should look like. Their answer: "Forget tabs!" ...A controversial proposal, but one that certainly makes a lot of sense in our opinion.
